Fundamentals of Drilling Engineering
SPE TEXTBOOK SERIES VOL 12, Fundamentals of Drilling Engineering is the most recent SPE drilling textbook. Not yet as popular as its predecessor VOL 2 (it's only been out since 2011, give it time), it has improved upon VOL 2 in many ways. Crystal-clear pictures. Diagrams of readable size. It also takes pains to “teach” the subject. Written for university upperclassmen, it’s technical but not overly so for engineers of moderate experience. 200 pages longer than VOL 2 (700 versus 500 pages) and weighing in at nearly 3.5 lbs, it's the real deal. The extra length is because: a) It is a better teaching textbook with lengthy explanations. b) It has clear, large photos, and neatly drawn pictures and diagrams. c) Recent technology is included. d) Written by multiple authors, it is not as crisp and streamlined as VOL 2. e) Drillstring Design, Directional Drilling, and Drilling Problems Chapters are superior. f) It has API SPEC in each chapter (this is valuable for the PE Exam)

Excellent Theory - Several Mistakes in Examples
Found the theory in this book excellent, easy to follow and understand. A highly academic approach which really stands out from similar "industry" written books. However, sections such as torque and drag, have several typos and incorrect answers in the numerical examples provided. This delayed my learning quite a bit as I had to go back and recalculate everything. I usually would oversee this if it happened once or twice, but the mistakes happened repeatedly. i.e.) Example 8.27 - Page 544 - Solving for F2, typos in equation (friction factor sign) and incorrect answer. Example 8.28 - Page 547 - Again solving for forces, typos in equation and incorrect answer i.e.) F = 64,350+((15)(3,000)) DOES NOT EQUAL 92,836 lbf. I found several other errors in this section of the book and I was quite disappointed considering the books in general are expensive and expect a higher quality in their examples.

Robert F. Mitchell is a Halliburton Fellow in the Drilling and Evaluation Division of Halliburton. Previously, he was vice president of Enertech Engineering and Research Company from 1980 to 1996 and worked at Exxon Production Research Co from 1973 to 1980. Mitchell has published more than 80 papers on wellbore and well completion problems. He edited the Drilling Engineering volume of SPE's 2007 Petroleum Engineering Handbook and is currently lead editor for the SPE textbook Fundamentals of Drilling Engineering. He has served as a technical editor for several peer-reviewed journals and served as the Executive Editor of SPE Drilling & Completion. Mitchell holds BA, MME, and PhD degrees from Rice University. He was the recipient of the 2005 SPE Drilling Engineering Award.


Stefan Z. Miska is currently Jonathan Detwiler Endowed Chair Professor of Petroleum Engineering and Director of Tulsa University Drilling Research Projects (TUDRP) at The University of Tulsa (TU). He obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Mining and Metallurgy in Cracow, Poland. Over the years, he has taught at his Alma Mater, at the Norwegian Institute of Technology and New Mexico Tech. In 1992 he joined TU as Chair of its P.E. Department. Miska published over 160 technical papers and contributed to several books. His current research interests are focused on wellbore hydraulics, mechanics of tubulars and directional drilling. He is involved with the SPE in many ways; he has served as Technical Editor for Drilling and Completion and is a member of the Drilling and Completion Advisory Committee. He was also the recipient of the 2000 Distinguished Petroleum Engineering Faculty, 2003 Outstanding Technical Editor and the 2004 Drilling Engineering awards. Miska also serves on the JPT Editorial Committee.
