Applied Multiphase Flow in Pipes and Flow Assurance - Oil and Gas Production
During my career, Two-Phase Flow in Pipes, Dr. Brill's first book, and Transport Phenomena by Bird, Stewart, and Lightfoot were constant and reliable references in my technical library. My first copies became so worn that I had to purchase 2nd copies of each. Applied Multiphase Flow in Pipes... is a similar must-have reference for Flow Assurance engineers and anyone interested in multiphase flow. Please make it sturdy as it is sure to become a well-worn reference. Furthermore, I think it is a great companion volume to Dr. Shoham's book, Mechanistic Modeling of Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flow in Pipes. Kudos to Drs. Brill and Al-Safran and to SPE for offering such a valuable resource.

This book provides a comprehensive treatment of topics of practical importance associated with single and multiphase flow in pipes. Liberal inclusion of examples in book will make it particularly suited as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses.

The authors are to be commended for their excellent compilation and discussions of the technology and design considerations available for developing complex and reliable oil and gas production systems. For those studying Petroleum Engineering, it is an excellent textbook with its many worked example calculations, and numerous exercise problems for student assignments. For the practicing professional, it is an excellent source of information on how to deal with, not only the fluid flow and heat transfer technology, but also the practical operational problems relating to Flow Assurance. It is rare for a single book to satisfy the needs of both groups so well. Eissa Al-Safran is an associate professor of petroleum engineering and former vice dean for research and academic affairs at the College of Engineering and Petroleum at Kuwait University, and a visiting research professor at the petroleum engineering (PE) department at the University of Tulsa (TU). He is currently a visiting professor at the nuclear science and engineering department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Al-Safran is the founder and director of the Kuwait University Production Research Center and cofounder and associate director of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology Production and Drilling research consortium.

James Brill
 is a professor emeritus of petroleum engineering at TU. He formed the TU Fluid Flow Projects in 1973 and the TU Paraffin Deposition Projects in 1995 to fund experimental research on multiphase flow in pipes and flow-assurance problems. Multiphase-flow experimental data and prediction models developed by Brill and his colleagues and students have played a significant role in offshore and Arctic facilities design.
